A historic synagogue in Mattancherry's Jew Town, built in 1568 for the Jewish community settled in Kochi, which included the old Malabari Jews and Sephardic Jews who had fled Spain and Portugal; it is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth. «Paradesi» means foreign, after the community's origins. The building has a small clock tower, a floor of hand-painted blue ceramic tiles brought from Canton in China in the eighteenth century, each with a different pattern, and old Belgian glass chandeliers. Only a handful of Kochi's Jews remain today, most having emigrated in the twentieth century, and the lanes around the synagogue have become a market of antique, spice and craft shops popular with tourists. The synagogue opens 10:00–12:00 and 15:00–17:00 and closes on Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays, with visitors entering barefoot, per Kerala's official tourism website; the entry fee is nominal and photography isn't allowed inside.
