A historic cathedral in Fort Kochi, first built by the Portuguese in 1505 with the permission of the king of Cochin and raised to cathedral status in 1558; it is now the seat of the Diocese of Cochin and one of Kerala's best-known heritage buildings. The Dutch destroyed many Catholic buildings when they took Kochi in the seventeenth century, and the cathedral was rebuilt in its present form in the late nineteenth century in a style mixing Gothic and Indo-European. It catches the eye with its gleaming white façade and twin pointed spires, while inside are columns, arches, ceilings decorated with colourful paintings and stained-glass windows. Entry is free; dress modestly and keep quiet, and avoid service times. It is a short walk from St Francis Church and Fort Kochi beach.
