Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral is a large wooden church in central Paramaribo. Its front is pale yellow and grey, with two tall pointed towers, a round window and palms around it, and it is among the largest wooden buildings in the Americas. The city's Catholics first used an old theatre building from 1826, then decided in 1882 to build a new cathedral. Frans Harmes designed it; building began on 30 January 1883 and it was consecrated in 1885, though the towers were not finished until 1901. The building decayed over time from tilting and termites, and a major restoration ended in 2010. It became a minor basilica in 2014. From outside you see the two tall towers, the blue columns at the entrances and the painted decoration above them. The interior is built of unpainted Surinamese cedar. It is a working church, so dress modestly if you go in and enter quietly. The cathedral is 600 m from Fort Zeelandia. Entry is free and donations are welcome. Keep your belongings safe in busy streets and do not walk alone in quiet spots.
