Geneva's largest and best-born park: La Grange was a lakeside estate whose last heir gave it to the city in 1918 — an eighteenth-century villa on its knoll, a Roman villa's remains beneath, and giant lawns rolling to the water directly opposite the Jet d'Eau. Its modern glory is roses: two rose gardens of ten thousand bushes make June here Switzerland's perfume capital — terraces opening to the lake with variety names reading like verse. A free summer theatre plays among the trees, and neighbouring Parc des Eaux-Vives adjoins with its beach. This is Geneva's quiet 'other' shore: Sunday families, shade readers and sunset watchers of the distant Jet — ten minutes' lakeside walk from the Flower Clock.

The adjoining Eaux-Vives beach: a free modern grass-and-deck lido — then the legendary Bains des Pâquis across the water for the historic version. The two shores are Geneva's true summer.
