With children or in heat: the boat, no debate โ two to three hours past the best inlets. For able walkers in mild weather, the En-Vau trail (three hours round trip from the car park) is the stronger experience, with a swim at the end. The ideal combination: a boat from Cassis, then lunch there.
The Sugiton cove specifically requires a free booking via the park site in summer to limit crowds, and all trails can close entirely on windy days for fire risk. The rule: never set out in summer without checking the site that morning.
Yes, by sea โ the boats deliver the whole spectacle from a seat. On land Sormiou is the gentlest trail; En-Vau the hardest, with a final rocky descent not for everyone. Know your limits: rescues in the calanques are a daily summer event.

The calanques are narrow fjord-like inlets the sea has carved into sheer white limestone between Marseille and the town of Cassis โ turquoise water held between pale rock walls hundreds of metres high, along twenty kilometres now protected as a national park. There are two ways in: by sea, on boat trips from Marseille's Vieux-Port or from Cassis that thread the inlets one after another; or on foot from Marseille's edge to Sormiou, En-Vau and the famous coves โ exposed trails ending at small beaches and the clearest swimming water in France. It is the finest natural thing Marseille offers โ give it half a day at least, a full one if you walk and swim.
