Parque Barigui, created in 1972, is one of Curitiba's largest and oldest parks, designed as a linear park to hold back floods and protect the native forest of the Barigui river basin; the river was dammed to form its big lake. A road splits it in two: woods and forest trails on one side, the lake on the other, home to birds, capybaras and small rodents. Locals and visitors come to walk, run, cycle and skate, and for picnics and family outings, with kiosks, outdoor gyms and cultural spaces.
