Chico Mendes Municipal Nature Park, or Chico Mendes Ecological Park, is a public reserve in Recreio dos Bandeirantes in western Rio de Janeiro, named in honour of the rubber-tapper leader and forest defender murdered in Acre in 1988. The park opened in 1989 to protect the Lagoinha das Tachas and its surroundings, home to rare and endangered animal and plant species, and it is one of the few places in the city where nearly intact marshes and coastal restinga survive. Bromeliads, ingá and pitanga trees and reptiles are among its main draws. In the 17th century its land was part of a vast grant on the Jacarepaguá plain, which its owner Vitória Correa de Sá left in 1667 to the Monastery of São Bento; manioc fields and sugar mills then spread across the area. It suits a quiet walk among birds near the beach; check the hours.
