Parque da Água Branca, officially Parque Fernando Costa, is a state park in the Barra Funda district of São Paulo on Avenida Francisco Matarazzo, covering about 137,000 square metres. It was proposed by the Brazilian Rural Society and began to take shape in 1905 as a city school of horticulture, and it was opened on 2 June 1929 by the agriculture secretary Fernando de Sousa Costa to host livestock shows and trials. The park was listed as cultural, historic, architectural and landscape heritage by São Paulo state in 1996 and by the city in 2004. It houses horse and cattle breeders' associations, the organic farmers' association, the Fisheries Institute and the Valdemar Lefèvre Geological Museum, among others. Beyond its history, it is a green refuge for the city, with lawns, a lake with fish and birds, playgrounds and picnic spots, and it hosts organic produce markets and cultural and environmental education events.
