The Theatro São Pedro is São Paulo's second-oldest working theatre after the Theatro Municipal, founded by the Portuguese Manuel Fernandes Lopes and opened on 20 January 1917, four days late because of a city hall embargo, with two plays. It was built in a neoclassical style with Art Nouveau touches, with 28 boxes and balconies holding more than a hundred seats. From the 1920s it ran as a cinema with occasional plays; in 1941 it closed and joined a commercial cinema chain, and in the 1960s its hall was used for storage and parking. Threatened with demolition in 1967, it was bought by artists including the famous actress Fernanda Montenegro and her husband Fernando Torres, who restored it and returned it to the stage. Today the theatre belongs to the state government and specialises in opera and classical music, with a regular programme of performances ticketed in advance. It is in the Campos Elíseos district near Marechal Deodoro metro station.
