Costa do Sol State Park was created by law on 18 April 2011 and covers about 9,841 hectares split into four sectors, each made of one or more areas in the municipalities of Araruama, Armação dos Búzios, Arraial do Cabo, Cabo Frio, Saquarema and São Pedro da Aldeia, in the Região dos Lagos on the coast of Rio de Janeiro state. Rather than a single block, the park is a set of scattered areas protecting varied ecosystems: sambaquis, the shell mounds left by ancient peoples, sand dunes, restinga scrub on coastal sand, lagoons and forests, all in a region famous for its beaches and clear water. Its sectors offer trails among dunes and rocky headlands with views over the lagoons and the ocean, rounding off a visit to the beaches of Arraial do Cabo and Búzios. As the sectors are far apart, decide in advance which one you are heading for and ask which trails are open.
