Parque Independencia is a public green space covering a whole hill south of central Tandil, opened on 4 April 1923 for the city's centenary, one of its best-known landmarks and its finest lookout. At its entrance stands a granite gateway shaped like a great arch, a gift to the city from the Italian community. A paved road spirals up to the top among trees and rocks, and on the summit stands the «Moorish Castle», a building of towers and arches in Andalusian style given by the city's Spanish community. From its lookout, and from the castle's terrace reached by a stair, a wide all-round view opens over the whole city, the hills and the surrounding plains. Entry is free, and you can drive or walk up. Just before sunset is loveliest, when the hills take on colour and the city lights up below.
