Pedra da Cebola Park, officially the Ítalo Batan Régis Municipal Park, lies between the Jardim da Penha and Mata da Praia districts on the mainland side of Vitória, covering 100,005 square metres of coastal «restinga» vegetation. It takes its name from a rock that nature shaped like a big onion, «cebola», which has become a symbol of the capital of Espírito Santo. The park opened in 1997 on the site of the old Goiabeiras quarry, an important step in Vitória's environmental recovery that turned an abandoned industrial site into green space. The quarry left a large rock wall now used by climbers, with a lookout above it over the park and the surrounding districts. The park has a meditation house and an oriental-style garden, a cultural space with events through the year, a broad flat area for events, baseball and football, and a small-sided pitch for football schools and rugby training. Entry is free, and it suits a quiet family outing in the morning or before sunset.
