Camburi Beach is Vitória's biggest and longest beach, about 6 km, and the only one on the mainland rather than the island, in the north of the city. Avenida Dante Michelini, known locally as the Beira-Mar, runs its full length past the seafronts of Mata da Praia, Jardim da Penha and Jardim Camburi. A wide, well-kept promenade runs along it, used by residents for running and walking and a social meeting point for the state's people, and it hosts national and world beach volleyball, beach football and sailing events. Vitória's best hotels line it. Its name is thought to come from an indigenous phrase meaning «the changing river» or «river of the snook». The beach is free and always open; early morning and sunset on the promenade are the nicest times.
