Villa-Lobos State Park lies in Alto de Pinheiros in western São Paulo, by the Pinheiros River, and is named after the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Its story is striking: in the late 1980s the site was a dump for rubbish, building rubble and river dredgings, until 732,000 m² were set aside for a park to mark the composer's birth centenary. Work began in 1989, clearing half a million cubic metres of debris and reshaping the ground. Today it has around 37,000 trees, a cycle path, sports courts, football pitches, playgrounds and a small wood of Atlantic Forest species. It hosted the São Paulo Open tennis tournament from 2001 to 2014 and the SP Open since 2025. Entry is free and it opens daily from 5:30 to 19:00 (to 20:00 in summer time), a calm family spot at weekends.
