A promenade and lookout on the edge of Artillery Hill right above Valparaíso's port, one of the city's finest viewpoints, with iron railings, trees, benches and an old wooden pavilion overlooking the whole bay. From here the working port lies below you: giant cranes and stacks of colourful containers, big ships at anchor and fishing boats, with the bay stretching east to the towers of Viña del Mar. Behind, colourful houses climb the other hills. The most enjoyable way up is the historic Artillería funicular from the lower town, one of Valparaíso's oldest. Near the promenade the National Maritime Museum, in the old naval school, shows cannons, ship models and documents on naval history. It is lovely on a clear morning and just before sunset, with souvenir kiosks along the promenade. Valparaíso has street theft in quiet, steep lanes, so stay in busy places by day and take taxis at night.
