Pedra Balão, the «Balloon Rock», is a rock formation about three kilometres from the centre of Poços de Caldas in southern Minas Gerais, shaped like a stone balloon perched on piled boulders, with a fine view over the surrounding hills. It sits on the northern rim, the «Anel Norte», of the Poços de Caldas alkaline complex, a vast circular geological structure left by ancient volcanic activity. Here lie great spherical boulders of a rare rock called lujavrite, which gave the place its name. The site was protected as a tourist attraction in 1996. It is reached by car along the Estrada Pedra Balão and can be combined with the city's other natural sights, such as the cable car and the waterfalls. Visiting is free; go on a clear day.
