Pedra Grande, the «Big Rock», is a 1,418-metre rocky massif in the Serra do Itapetinga above Atibaia, about sixty kilometres from São Paulo; its bare stone face spreads over some 200,000 square metres, and it is the main draw for visitors to the area. The Atibaia range and its rock dome were listed as state heritage in 1983, and in 2010 the area became a «natural monument» of 3,297 hectares run by the state forestry foundation to protect its biological, geological and scenic features; it is part of the linked Cantareira network of reserves. Its summit is a broad lookout over Atibaia and neighbouring towns, popular with hang-gliders, paragliders, climbers, hikers and mountain bikers, and at its foot a hang-gliding strip hosts flying schools that offer lessons and tandem flights. It is a fine sunset spot; check weather and wind before going up.
