Picinguaba is the northernmost point of the São Paulo coast, a district of Ubatuba on the border with Paraty in Rio de Janeiro state; its name is Tupi for 'refuge of fish'. Its centre is a fishing village, many of whose people live within the Picinguaba unit of the Serra do Mar State Park, which runs a research centre here. Numerous footpaths lead through Atlantic Forest to beaches and rivers, and the village has houses and guesthouses to rent. The district, created in 1944, covers about 223 km² and has some 2,000 inhabitants.
