With children or teenagers and in poor weather, yes โ Heidelberg is a small city with limited indoor options and the dome is twenty minutes away by train. Alone and with one day in Heidelberg, the castle, the old town and the Philosophers' Walk have the better claim.
The baroque Mannheim palace is among Europe's largest and partly houses the university today, the water tower and its gardens are the city's emblem, and the Kunsthalle Mannheim is strong on modern art. The city is practical rather than touristic but merits half a day.

A planetarium in Mannheim, among the oldest still operating in Germany, about twenty kilometres from Heidelberg. Shows are given inside a dome onto which the sky is projected by a star projector, alongside full-dome digital programmes on the solar system, galaxies and deep space. This is a kind of visit that works particularly well with children and teenagers: the show is visual and aural and requires no reading, and you sit in a reclined seat looking upwards for forty minutes. The most important practical matter is language: most shows are in German, with some given in other languages at set times or through translation headsets. Check the programme and its language before booking a particular slot, because a show in a language you do not follow loses half its value. Mannheim is about twenty minutes by train from Heidelberg and is an entirely different city: modern and laid out on a grid of numbered squares instead of street names, a curiosity worth looking at in itself.
