**A near-enclosed shell-shaped bay with a kilometre and a half of sand in the middle of the city — reckoned among the finest urban beaches in the world** — at the heart of San Sebastián. ⚠ **The shape is the reason**: **the bay is nearly circular with a narrow mouth**, **and in the middle of that mouth stands the island of Santa Clara** — ✅ **breaking the swell coming in off Biscay**; **the result is calm water inside a city**, **which is rare on an Atlantic coast known for its waves**. ✅ **Two hills close it on either side**: **Igueldo to the west and Urgull to the east** — **so the bay reads as framed**. ✅ **Its white iron railing (*la barandilla*)** of 1910 **has become the city's emblem** — **and you see it on everything**. ⚠ **The tidal range is large** — **and the beach changes size hour by hour**.

**The Basque version of tapas — but the rules are quite different, and not knowing them costs you the experience.** ✅ **What they are**: a ***pintxo*** is a small piece of food **set on a slice of bread and pinned with a wooden skewer** — ⚠ **from which the name comes**; **displayed along the bar in front of you**. ✅ **⚠ The difference from tapas**: **tapas come free with a drink in parts of Spain**, ⚠ **pintxos are bought individually** — **each with its own price**. ✅ **⚠ How to eat**: **(1) do not sit down** — **the way is standing at the bar**; **(2) do not order from a menu** — **take a plate and help yourself from the bar** (or order the hot pintxos from the kitchen, **usually the best, and chalked on a board**); **(3) keep your skewers** — ⚠ **you are charged by counting them at the end**, **and the system runs on trust**; **(4) do not stay in one place** — ✅ **the rule is one or two with a drink and then on to the next bar**; **which is the *txikiteo*, the bar round**. ✅ **The best place: the lanes of the Parte Vieja, the old town.** ⚠ **Peak is 20:00–23:00** and very crowded.
