The Benjamin Constant Bridge, also known as the «Metal Bridge», is a suspension bridge on Avenida Sete de Setembro in Manaus, crossing the Igarapé do Mestre Chico to link the Cachoeirinha district with the city centre. It is considered one of the most beautiful bridges in Brazil and one of the most imposing in Manaus. Construction began in 1893 under the English engineer Frank Hirst Hebblethwaite, with ironwork made by the English firm Dorman Long, and it opened on 7 September 1895. The state governor of the day, Eduardo Ribeiro, chose to build it of iron and steel for the people's safety, at a time when Manaus, rich from the rubber trade, was adopting a very English style of architecture, as in the Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market. The bridge was completely rebuilt in 1938 and restored in the 1960s; it was closed to heavy vehicles in 2005 because of the risk of collapse, before being restored again as part of a social and environmental programme for the city's streams. It is worth a stop for photographs, especially at sunset, on a walk around the historic centre.
