A small town on the east bank of the Suez Canal opposite Port Said, founded in 1926 to relieve crowding in Port Said and named after King Fuad I. It sits at the north-western tip of the Sinai Peninsula, so it is in Asia while Port Said is in Africa, and people cross between them every day. The best experience here is the free ferry across the canal, which takes just minutes and passes giant cargo ships and container carriers and the green-domed Suez Canal Authority Building, carrying you from Africa to Asia in a short crossing. Port Fuad keeps a calm, distinct character, with tree-lined streets and old European-style villas with tiled roofs and gardens, while the Port Fuad Grand Mosque, with its two tall minarets and white dome, overlooks the canal, and a Mediterranean beach lies on its edge. The ferry is free and runs all day, and wandering the town costs nothing. Sunset is the loveliest time, when the canal water glows and the buildings on both banks light up.
