Spain's largest theme park complex and among Europe's biggest, near Salou on the Costa Daurada southwest of Barcelona. The complex has three parts: the main park divided into areas representing different civilisations and places — the Mediterranean, China, Polynesia, Mexico and the American West — a separate water park, and Ferrari Land, given to cars and speed. This is a family destination first, and one of the few places in Spain around which a whole trip is built rather than a stop. The rides run from small children's attractions up to some of the tallest and fastest roller coasters in Europe. It should be clear that it is not in Barcelona: about a hundred kilometres south, reached by direct train from Barcelona in around an hour and a quarter to a station inside the complex, or by car in about an hour. Count on a full day at minimum. The complex is vast, distances inside it are long, and queues in summer and on holidays can swallow hours.

Salou, about 100 km southwest of Barcelona
The easiest way is the direct train from Sants or Passeig de Gràcia to PortAventura station, effectively inside the complex, about an hour and a quarter. By car it is roughly an hour on the motorway. A day trip is entirely feasible, but start early.
Book tickets online in advance, arrive at opening and head for the best-known rides first, as queues lengthen through the afternoon. Avoid weekends and Spanish public holidays if you can. Queue-skip tickets exist at extra cost and can be worth it at the height of summer.
