Praça Rui Barbosa is a historic square in central Araçatuba, São Paulo state, once known as Praça Cristiano Olsen and as Praça do Boi Gordo, the «Fat Ox Square», which gave the city its national nickname, the «City of the Fat Ox». For more than thirty years cattle ranchers gathered in the square to strike land and livestock deals, and set the price of cattle for the whole of Brazil there. It was first named after the surveyor Cristiano Olsen, killed in 1910, and some sources say its layout was inspired by the Place Charles de Gaulle in Paris. The village plan was drawn in 1912; a fire destroyed the first layout, which was redone in 1914, and a football club stood on the site until 1917, before the square was remodelled in 1924 and renamed. Today it remains a busy centre, full of people near the city's pedestrian shopping street.
