Brazilian focus.
The Dr. Flávio Leite Ribeiro Municipal Zoo in Araçatuba, São Paulo state, is a green space in the heart of the city focused on Brazilian wildlife; press reports put its collection at about three hundred animals, around twenty of them large species. In the 1980s the zoo was one of the country's leading breeders and suppliers of big cats, especially lions, sending them to several zoos including Rio de Janeiro's. For many years the hippopotamus Miltão was its symbol, and he was one of the oldest hippos in the country. The zoo stands on Rua do Fico in the São Joaquim district and suits a short family outing in the city, with shady paths among the trees. No recent official opening hours are published, so check days and admission with Araçatuba city hall before visiting.
