Redinha is the only beach in Natal's North Zone, across the mouth of the Potengi River from the city centre, running between the municipalities of Natal and Extremoz. The Natal side is known as «Redinha Velha», old Redinha, to set it apart from «Redinha Nova» in Extremoz, home of the Natal Aquarium. From its sand you see the Reis Magos fort at the river mouth and the city skyline. It draws local families at weekends more than tourists, and is known for its simple, rustic houses and stalls and for «ginga com tapioca», Natal's best-loved street dish: small fish coated in cornmeal, fried in dendê palm oil and served with tapioca made from cassava starch. It is eaten at the small market by the beach. The beach is part of the «Special Area of Tourist Interest» on Natal's coast, watched by cameras around the clock. It is reached from the centre over the Newton Navarro Bridge across the Potengi, and the view from the bridge itself is worth it.
