Pitangueiras is the central beach of Guarujá on the São Paulo coast and the first beach you see whether you arrive by ferry or by road, dividing the city's shore into northern and southern beaches. The seafront road along it, Avenida Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca, runs about two kilometres, lined with tall apartment blocks. It was once known as «Orange Beach» for the orange groves that grew here. The beach is good for swimming, well served, and one of the busiest on the coast. Surfers favour the end by «Morro do Maluf», properly Morro da Campina, and in the middle sits a small rocky islet called Pombeva, home to birds and crabs. Restaurants, cafés and a shopping centre line its promenade. At its western end stands the «Sobre as Ondas» building, «on the waves», built so close to the sea that the water reaches its base at high tide, and it has become one of Guarujá's best-known sights. The beach is packed in summer and at weekends, so go in the morning.
