Astúrias is a beach of fine, pale sand in Guarujá, about a kilometre long, between Tombo and Pitangueiras beaches, in a sheltered cove between the Galhetas headland and the famous «Sobre as Ondas» building. Upmarket neighbourhoods of apartment blocks surround it, making it one of the town's sought-after areas. Its name has a curious story: the spot was once known simply as «Guarujá beach», then in the early 20th century the Spanish liner «Príncipe de Asturias» sank off Ilhabela, and two surviving crewmen opened a bar on this beach named after their ship, which became a meeting place, so the whole area took the name «Astúrias». As a sheltered cove its water is usually calmer than the open beaches nearby, good for families. At the entrance to the road up to the «Mirante da Caixa d'Água» there is a fresh-fish market popular with locals, and above it a lookout over the neighbouring beaches. The beach gets busy in summer, so arrive in the morning.
