Cabo Branco is an urban beach in João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba, with fine, firm sand and coconut palms, ending to the south at «living cliffs» up to forty metres high, so called because wind and waves are still carving and reshaping them. Above the cliff stands the Cabo Branco lighthouse, and close by is Ponta do Seixas, the easternmost point of the Americas, along with the Estação Cabo Branco cultural centre designed by Oscar Niemeyer. On the avenue overlooking the beach, at number 3336, a house has become a museum: the José Américo House Foundation, devoted to the Paraíba writer and politician, keeps the house as it was when he lived there and runs a study and research centre. A promenade and cycle path run along the beach north towards Tambaú, the water is calm in many spots at low tide, and stalls dot the sand. The best time for a walk is early morning, when the sun rises out of the sea before almost anywhere else in Brazil.
