Praia do Forte is the main beach of Cabo Frio, a resort in the Lakes Region east of Rio de Janeiro, running about 7.5 km, with the 17th-century Fort of São Mateus at its end. The town grew into a well-known resort in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. The water changes along the beach: at the left end by the fort it is calmer and warmer but more crowded, and as you walk right towards Praia das Dunas the waves grow and surfers gather. The beach hosts the biggest New Year's Eve party in the Lakes Region, with about half a million people on the sand for 2017-2018. The beach is free, with kiosks and chairs for hire along it, and summer from December to February is very busy.
