Praia Vermelha, «Red Beach», is a small beach in the quiet Urca district at the foot of Sugarloaf and Morro da Urca, beside the station of the cable car to the top (Sugarloaf has its own page). Urca itself is a traditional South Zone district with universities, military schools and the old Casino da Urca. From the end of the beach starts the Pista Cláudio Coutinho, a flat path of about 1.25 km that wraps around the base of Morro da Urca between the sea and remnants of Atlantic Forest, with lovely ocean viewpoints. Small marmoset monkeys are common along it, along with birds and lizards, and it is for walking and running only: no bikes, skateboards or skates. The beach and the trail are free, and the trail opens daily from 6:00 to 18:00. Morning is the nicest time to walk it, before taking the cable car.
