**A stone bridge a hundred metres high spanning a cleft that splits the town in two — with a chamber inside it that served as a prison** — and it is the image of Ronda entire. ⚠ **The cleft is the town**: **El Tajo** — a narrow, deep gorge cut by the Guadalevín, **separating the old quarter from the new**; **about a hundred metres deep and only tens of metres wide**. ⚠ **The bridge cost dearly**: **it took from 1759 to 1793**, ✅ **and an earlier bridge collapsed in 1741, killing dozens**. ⚠ **Within its mass, above the central arch, is a chamber** — **used as a prison**, ⚠ **and the subject of many Civil War stories, some undocumented**; **today it is a small interpretation centre**. ✅ **Seeing it from below is a wholly different thing from walking across it.**

**The river cut it over millions of years — and the town was built there because the gorge is a perfect natural defence.** ✅ **The geology**: **the small Guadalevín river runs over a limestone plateau** — ⚠ **and limestone dissolves in slightly acidic water**; **so the river does not only scour the rock but dissolves it**. ✅ **And as the plateau rose gradually through tectonic movement**, **the river held its course and cut vertically downward** instead of wandering — ⚠ **producing a narrow deep cleft rather than a broad valley**; **what is called an incised or entrenched gorge**. ✅ **Why a town here**: ⚠ **the gorge is a nearly unbeatable defence**: **a hundred-metre vertical drop on three sides** — **no ladders, no assault, and early artillery useless**. ✅ **Which is why Ronda was **among the last strongholds of Islamic rule** in the region**, **not falling until 1485**, ⚠ **and then not by storm but by artillery and siege**. ✅ **The price**: **water**. ⚠ **A town on a cliff has none** — **which is why the «water mine» was cut inside the House of the Moorish King**: **a stair in the rock descending a hundred metres to the river**, **up which captives carried water on their shoulders**.
