A huge convention centre on a hill at the southern end of Putrajaya, completed in 2003 and looking over the city and lake from the highest point in the area. Malaysia's fourth prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, designed it to resemble the pending perak, a silver royal belt buckle of Malay heritage. In its opening year it hosted the tenth Islamic Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and it stages conferences, exhibitions and major concerts; it has also been one of Malaysia's crescent-moon sighting points. Inside are several halls, the largest seating three thousand. Visitors approach it across the ceremonial Seri Gemilang Bridge, and its forecourt has a wide view along Putrajaya's boulevard, its government buildings and the distant dome of Putra Mosque. The interior is usually open for events only, while viewing from outside is free. Make it the last stop of a Putrajaya tour after the Seri Gemilang Bridge, and come before sunset to see the administrative capital's lights come on.
