A large park in the heart of Viña del Mar, once the estate of the Vergara family who founded the city, filled with rare trees from around the world planted more than a century ago: palms, araucarias and giants, shady walks, green lawns and fountains. At its centre stands the Palacio Vergara, an elegant early-twentieth-century building in Venetian Gothic style, home of the city's fine arts museum with European and Chilean paintings; it was closed for years of restoration after the 2010 earthquake, so check it is open before visiting. The park's best-known feature is its big open-air amphitheatre, host every February since 1960 of the Viña del Mar International Song Festival, one of Latin America's most famous music festivals, broadcast to millions. The park is calm and good for family strolls, close to the coastal train station and the town centre.
