The Red House is Vaduz's second most recognisable building after the castle, and a familiar landmark in every panoramic photograph of the town: a sturdy country house of white walls, a vivid red tiled roof and a small square tower, standing alone among vineyards on the slope above the centre. Its origins are medieval (mentioned in the fourteenth century) and it belonged to the Swiss abbey of St Johann before passing into private hands. The present building in its distinctive form is nineteenth-century, and it remains a **private residence** that cannot be entered — but it is seen and photographed from the public road and the surrounding vines. It stands roughly on the walking route up to Vaduz Castle, and with the vineyards and mountains behind it makes the capital's most famous rural view — a few minutes' photo stop on your way up, not a destination in itself.
