Oman's leading venue for the musical arts, in the Shati Al Qurum district on Sultan Qaboos Street. It was built on the orders of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, a known lover of classical music, and opened on 12 October 2011. The broad white building reflects contemporary Omani architecture, with stone facades, arches and latticed windows. Inside, the main auditorium seats about 1,100 people, lined with carved wood picked out in gold under decorated ceilings, and can be adapted for opera, concerts and ballet. Besides the theatre, the complex has landscaped gardens, a cultural market with shops and restaurants, an arts centre and an exhibition of musical arts. Through the season it stages opera, symphony concerts and ballet by companies from around the world. The building can be seen on short guided tours on working days, priced at about 3-4 OMR for adults per visitor guides; performances have their own tickets. The house asks for modest, smart dress at performances.
