A historic stone fort on the summit of Mount Murdjajo, nearly four hundred metres up, overlooking Oran and its whole bay, built by the Spanish between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries during their occupation of the city, and now Oran's foremost symbol. The fort guards the harbour and bay with thick walls and towers, crossed by old stone passages and halls. Below it on the slope is a small chapel with a statue on its tower, from which walking trails lead into the mountain forest. What draws most visitors is the panoramic view from the ramparts over Oran, the port and the sea to the surrounding mountains, loveliest at sunset when the city colours, and on clear days reaching far along the coast. The fort opens from 10 am until 4 pm in winter and 7 pm in summer, per visitor guides, with a token entry fee. Visitors reach it by car or by the city cable car, which sometimes runs intermittently, followed by an uphill walk of about half an hour.
