The Santos Beach Gardens are a continuous green strip running along the city's whole beach, 5,335 metres long and 45 to 50 metres wide, covering nearly 219,000 square metres across seven districts from José Menino to Ponta da Praia. In 2002 Guinness World Records listed them as the largest beachfront garden in the world. They are made of long lawns and avenues of palms and almond trees, with 719 flower beds holding 77 species of perennial flowers, mostly yellow and white lilies and red canna. The beds facing the south wind are planted with tougher species that shelter the ones behind. People walk, run and cycle along them, and the gardens are free and open. The best time for a stroll is early morning or late in the day.
