São Paulo Zoo is the largest zoo in Brazil, in the city's South Zone, covering about 82 hectares of what was once Atlantic Forest, with the spring of the historic Ipiranga brook and four kilometres of paths. It opened in 1958 with just over four hundred animals. Today it holds more than 3,200 animals of over 400 species, including 102 species of mammals and 216 of birds, in enclosures that recreate their habitats; it has a large farm growing the animals' food and a nursery for young rejected by their mothers. Tickets start at R$99.90 bought at least a day ahead, R$119.90 on the day, and are free for children under 4. It opens Monday to Friday 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:00) and weekends and holidays 8:30-18:00 (last entry 17:00).
