The lotus pond

A small, elegant temple at the heart of Ubud, famous for the broad lotus pond before it, crossed by a stone walkway leading to the finely carved temple gate, one of the town's loveliest scenes, especially when the pink lotus flowers open in the morning. It was designed in the mid-twentieth century by the celebrated Balinese artist I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, and skilful stone carving decorates its walls. In the evening a traditional Balinese dance performance is held in its courtyard against the lit temple, one of Ubud's best-known shows. The outer courtyard and lotus pond are free; the inner temple is for worshippers, and evening dance shows are ticketed at the entrance. Come in the morning to see the lotus open in soft light, or in the evening for the show. It is minutes from the palace and market.
