A two-stage fall

The easiest of Senaru's waterfalls to reach, in forest on Rinjani's slopes, dropping in two stages over a greenery-clad rock face into a pool and streams. It is ten to fifteen minutes down a staircase from the entrance, so it suits most visitors. The falls are surrounded by dense tropical forest with monkeys in the trees, spray fills the air, and visitors stand under the water or sit on the rocks. From here the trail continues to the larger and lovelier Tiu Kelep, for anyone who wants to carry on. Entry is a token fee at the local rate, possibly a little more for foreigners; a guide is optional here but usually needed to continue to Tiu Kelep. The climb back up the stairs is a bit tiring in the humidity. Senaru village is also the starting point for Mount Rinjani climbs, so the waterfalls make a warm-up outing. Bring a change of clothes if you want to stand under the water.

Sendang Gile is easier and closer and suits everyone; Tiu Kelep is bigger and lovelier but needs a walk and wading. If you can, see both together.
