Monterosso–Vernazza

**A coastal walking path of some twelve kilometres linking the five villages along the cliff edge** — Italy's most famous coastal walk. ⚠ **It is not one continuously open route**: **its sections close and reopen constantly** because of **rockfalls and mudslides** — ⚠ **and some have been shut for years**. ✅ **There are four sections**: **Monterosso–Vernazza** (⚠ the hardest, about two hours, and the finest views), **Vernazza–Corniglia** (⚠ hard, an hour and a half), **Corniglia–Manarola**, and **Manarola–Riomaggiore** (the **Path of Love**, ✅ the easiest and the most often shut). ⚠ **It is not a stroll**: **endless stone steps**, **steep climbing and descent**, **and no shade**. ⚠ **Proper footwear is compulsory and fines are issued.**

**Because the cliff is genuinely unstable — and abandoned terraces have made it worse.** ✅ **The geology**: **this coast is a steep cliff of fractured rock** — ⚠ **and rockfalls are part of its nature**, not an exceptional accident. ✅ **Rain is the trigger**: **short, heavy downpours** — increasingly frequent — **saturate the thin soil above the rock, and it slides**. ⚠ **And the decisive human factor**: **thousands of kilometres of dry-stone wall** were built over centuries **to hold soil on the slopes**; ⚠ **and abandoned farming means nobody repairs them** — **so the walls collapse, and the soil they held is released**, **turning into a mudslide**. ⚠ **Which is exactly what happened in the flood of October 2011**: **Vernazza was buried under metres of mud and people were killed**. ✅ **So the closures are not bureaucracy**: **sections are shut after engineering assessment**, ⚠ **and reopened when stabilised** — **which sometimes takes years**; **the Path of Love was closed for about twelve**. ⚠ **⚠ And never pass a closure barrier**: **the hazard is rock falling from height** — **against which alertness is no protection**.
