A resort island off Singapore's south coast, separated from the main island by Keppel Harbour. It was a British military base and then a Second World War prisoner-of-war camp, before being renamed Sentosa in the 1970s and turned into a resort that draws millions of visitors a year. It has palm-fringed sandy beaches, among them Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong, a suspension bridge to a small islet off Palawan Beach, and the historic Fort Siloso. It is also home to Resorts World Sentosa with Universal Studios, an aquarium, the Skyline Luge and evening beach shows. You reach it by monorail, cable car or on foot along a boardwalk. Walking in over the boardwalk is free, a small fee applies on some transport in, and the beaches are free, while attractions are ticketed separately. Allow a full day to combine beaches and sights.
