Serralves is Porto's modern cultural campus: Portugal's first contemporary-art museum in Álvaro Siza's white building (1999) — Porto being home of Portugal's most famous architect and Pritzker laureate, his building here a lesson in luminous minimum worth the trip as pure architecture. The estate is eighteen hectares and three museums: the pink Villa Serralves — Portugal's purest preserved Art Deco (1930s) with its furniture — a garden stepping through roses, lakes and meadows to a children's farm, the Treetop Walk hung among the canopies and walked by every age — and the Manoel de Oliveira cinema house a fourth wing for the city's film patriarch. It is Porto's other half-day, away from granite and river — familial, artistic and green at once, served west by metro-plus-bus. Exhibitions rotate — villa, garden and walkway are the constant worth.
