A seaside garden at the southern tip of Gulangyu, built in the early twentieth century by the businessman Lin Erjia, known as «Shuzhuang», on the model of his family's garden at Banqiao near Taipei; it took more than ten years to build. The garden has two parts: «Mending the Mountain», with winding paths and stone steps among the rocks, and «Hiding the Sea», which suddenly reveals the sea from pavilions and windows; its best-known feature is the zigzag Forty-Four Arches Bridge over the water. The garden houses the island's piano museum, with a collection of rare historic pianos, and is part of Gulangyu's group of protected modern buildings. Tickets are about CNY 30, also covered by the island's combined pass, per visitor guides; high tide is the loveliest time, when the waves come up to the bridge.
