The provincial museum of Sichuan and one of the largest in southwest China, founded in 1941; its present building, opened in 2009, stands near Huanhuaxi Park in west Chengdu, and it's ranked a national first-class museum. It holds more than 360,000 objects, 1,318 of them first-grade relics, covering the archaeology, history, art and peoples of Sichuan, from ancient bronzes, ceramics, paintings and calligraphy to the costumes and crafts of its ethnic groups. Highlights include its collection of carved Han-dynasty bricks showing scenes of daily life, banquets and hunting, and galleries of painting and calligraphy from many eras. Entry is free with an advance time-slot booking, foreigners need their passport, and it opens Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–17:00, closed Mondays, per visitor guides.
