A huge stone viaduct of successive arches crossing the Rhumel gorge south of the old town, opened in 1912 and counted among the longest and most impressive stone arch bridges in the world, with twenty-seven arches and a wide main arch over the chasm. The viaduct runs more than four hundred metres and rises over a hundred metres above the valley floor, carrying traffic between the old town, the railway station and the southern districts, looking from below and from the other bridges like a stone wall hung in space. The best views of it are from the road down into the valley and from the modern cable-stayed Salah Bey Bridge, opened in 2014 to add an imposing new crossing to Constantine. Crossing and viewing are free at any time. It pairs with a tour of Constantine's other bridges: Sidi M'Cid, Mellah Slimane and Bab El Kantara.
