Skalnaté Pleso is a mountain lake in the High Tatras of northern Slovakia, at 1,751 metres, about 15 km north of Poprad in a straight line, above the resort of Tatranská Lomnica. The highest wind speed ever recorded in Slovakia was measured here on 29 November 1965: 283 km/h. The lake is filled only by precipitation, and in November 2021 it dried out completely after a dry spell before refilling. The Skalnatý brook flows through it and its water sometimes disappears in the dry season. A well-known astronomical observatory stands nearby. The small lake lies in a rocky basin among boulder fields and dwarf pine, with the towering Lomnický štít rising straight above it, and on calm days the mountains are mirrored in its surface. Visitors arrive by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica or on foot by mountain trails, walk around the lake, and many continue by cable car to the summit of Lomnický štít. Mountain weather changes fast, so bring warm clothes.
