The main square at the heart of Tirana, named after the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg and spread over about 40,000 square metres, with his great equestrian statue at its centre. It is the natural starting point for any walk around the capital. Some of the city's landmark buildings frame it: the Palace of Culture and National Opera, the National History Museum with its famous mosaic façade, the Clock Tower, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the city hall and ministries. Recently redesigned, the square is now a vast pedestrian space paved with stones from every region of Albania, with ground-level fountains and small gardens around its edges, and has become a place for strolling and events. It is free and open all day, at its best in the evening when the buildings are lit. The Clock Tower, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the New Bazaar and the Blloku district are all an easy walk away.
