The Southern Ridges are 10 km of trails linking three parks along Singapore's southern ridge, between Kent Ridge Park and HarbourFront. They combine forest, striking bridges and views of the port and city, and form one of the best long walks in Singapore. The Urban Redevelopment Authority came up with the idea in 2002, and linking the parks took two years and S$25.5 million. The route takes in Mount Faber, one of the country's oldest parks, Telok Blangah Hill Park with its 34 hectares and terraced gardens, and the 47-hectare Kent Ridge Park. The finest parts are raised walkways at treetop level, where you walk above the ground among the branches. The wave-shaped Henderson Waves bridge links Mount Faber and Telok Blangah, with its curved timber ribs. From high points you see housing towers, the container port and cable car lines over the city, with thick trees in the foreground. Two to four hours is enough, and you can walk just one section rather than the whole route. Set out early or before sunset because of the heat, and bring water and comfortable shoes, as some stretches have steps. It is 1.9 km in a straight line from Tiong Bahru, so you can end the walk there for a meal.
